NIEI’s main activity involves researching and developing strategies,positions and rights base mechanisms on electoral and democratic best practices in Malaysia. Base on its research and findings, NIEI advocates for a rights base electoral and democratic policy and reforms and conduct capacity building among stake holders on democratic and participatory process. NIEI also provides analytical services, technical assistance, and project implementation to all stake holders on electoral and democratic process.
NIEI in 2012 conducted the country’s 1st National Voter Education Audit and have developed Manuals on Electoral Audit.We also engage in making submissions to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Election Reform and other public consultation processes.
Since 2011, NIEI have conducted various stakeholder consultation and dialogue and other community mapping on electoral issues and public opinion. NIEI have also conducted regular Electoral & Voter Education among communities and other capacity building exercise among the stake holders. We engage with various target groups with a focus on vulnerable and rural communities including in Sabah & Sarawak.
NIEI works with the Election Commission of Malaysia on the National Electoral Education Action Plan and provide technical and best practice support to the Commission. NIEI is the official partner of the Election Commission of Malaysia on Electoral and Voter Education.
NIEI also engages and facilitate in election monitoring and observation missions. NIEI in the past have observed various domestic and international Elections in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Nepal,Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Aceh and The Philippines since 2004.
NIEI is the endorser of The Declaration of Global Principles for Nonpartisan Election Observation and Monitoring by Citizen Organizations and its code of conduct.
